Think “content,” and you may be inclined to think about text. But in the age of fast broadband, content consumers want more than just words. They want images, they want audio and they want video as well. And in order to make the most of your website, you should be including them. It’s not just users who will benefit, but using various types of content can also have SEO benefits. So which types of content and which platforms is it worth using?

Text

I know I just said content isn’t just text. But of course that doesn’t mean no text at all is a good thing. Words on a page can be fundamental for both users and of course, search engines. Text content should be clear, concise, relevant, unique and high quality. If you’re not a copywriter yourself, then hire one!

Images

From a conversion perspective, text heavy pages can be a turn off. Images offer an aesthetic benefit. A picture says 1000 words, so the proverb goes. I’m not convinced 1000 is accurate but if you’re selling products on your site, images are essential. Keep them SEO friendly by ensuring optimised alt tags and titles.

Video

Video is a powerful tool. It enables you to “speak” directly to your website’s audience and can add a personal dimension to your web based business. The internet can be a little anonymous at times and video is a way around it, adding a trust element to your website. If you sell particularly complex services, video can be a great way of explaining them in plain English. In addition, video results can often penetrate Google’s organic listings. So ensuring you have a video presence on sites like Youtube can be a good way to get your brand out there.
